About the clinic
The Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois (CHUV) is one of the five university hospitals in Switzerland and the main public hospital of the canton of Vaud. Its origins go back to the Middle Ages — a hospice was founded in Villeneuve in 1236, and the Hôpital Notre-Dame in Lausanne was taken over as the cantonal hospital in 1806 — and it was elevated to the status of a university hospital with a faculty of medicine in 1890. Today it operates across several sites with 1,568 beds and more than 11,000 staff, admitting over 50,000 patients a year. The CHUV covers all areas of medicine: emergency care, general and specialist acute care for the whole canton, and university-level specialised centres in fields such as oncology, cardiac surgery, clinical neurosciences, orthopaedics and the musculoskeletal system, obstetrics and medical genetics, and psychiatry. In partnership with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne and EPFL, it is also one of Switzerland's most important centres for medical research and training. As a public hospital it treats patients under basic health insurance; private care is available through its semi-private and private wards.
